Tokugawa Era
Tokugawa rulers established control of the feudal system that governed Japan over 300 years. Since the 14th century, many upper-class Japanese, influenced by confucianism, had considered trade and industry beneath them. Under Tokugawa rulers, trade and industry began to flourish as never before, especially growing in cities of Edo, Kyōto, and Ōsaka. |
